Can I Expect to Have a Lot of Pain with Implant Surgery?
What to Expect After Implant Surgery
Over the years, many patients have told us about friends or family who have experienced a great deal of pain and complications after having their dental implants placed. We have not seen this with the vast majority of our patients after we have placed their implants. We attribute this to our pain medication regimen before, during, and after the surgery as well as the surgical technique that is performed. Many of our patients have even experienced no pain at all.
The difference between a comfortable and painful recovery often comes down to the specifics of how the surgery is performed and how the body is prepared for it. Fear about implant pain is one of the most common concerns we hear, but when patients understand the science behind our approach, they realize their concerns are unfounded. We take pain management seriously, implementing a comprehensive strategy that starts before you ever arrive for surgery.
Our Proven Pain Prevention Strategy
One factor that helps prevent post-operative discomfort is proper preplanning of each case so that the implants are placed in ideal positions in the bone and in relation to the best gum (gingival) tissues. This helps to prevent complications. When implants are positioned correctly, there’s less tissue trauma during placement and fewer complications afterward. Another factor is the best use of anti-inflammatory medications on an individualized basis to obtain the best results.
Dr. Marlin’s use of atraumatic surgical techniques minimizes tissue damage during the procedure itself. Precise planning through CT scanning allows for minimal flap designs and strategic drilling that respects your bone and soft tissues. This thoughtful approach translates directly to reduced swelling, less discomfort, and faster healing.
The vast majority of our patients tell us that they do not have a great deal of pain after dental implant surgery. Therefore, in our experience, the answer is no. Most patients report that any minor discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and resolves within a few days. Your fear about pain should not prevent you from achieving a beautiful, permanent tooth replacement.
