A recent graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, sought our services to fix his smile. While he was attending the Naval Academy, he experienced a traumatic injury to his four front teeth. At the time of the injury, he received emergency care that resulted in a temporary crown being placed.

However, the temporary crown was unsightly and did not give him confidence in his appearance. Additionally, two of his other front teeth had fractures and had previously undergone root canal therapy, meaning they were already compromised by both trauma and endodontic treatment.

The Challenge: Time Constraints and Quality Requirements

Even though the patient had since moved to North Carolina after graduating from the Naval Academy, he made the decision to return to the Washington DC area for his restoration. He recognized that he needed crowns fabricated by someone with expertise in cosmetic prosthodontic treatment, someone who could deliver high-quality results in a timely manner.

At Elite Prosthetic Dentistry, we have the advantage of maintaining an in-house dental laboratory, which allows us to fabricate multiple crowns quickly and with exceptional attention to detail. The patient was willing to travel back to DC because he understood that our in-house lab capabilities would allow us to provide comprehensive restoration on a timely basis while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Treatment Approach: Comprehensive Anterior Restoration

The treatment plan involved fabricating four custom crowns to address the traumatized front teeth and the two adjacent teeth with previous fractures and root canal therapy. The restoration needed to address several considerations:

First, the crowns needed to look completely natural and match the patient’s remaining natural teeth. Second, they needed to restore proper function so the patient could bite and chew normally. Third, they needed to provide a smile line that enhanced his appearance and gave him confidence.

Our in-house laboratory technician worked with precision to create crowns that matched the patient’s tooth color, translucency, and shape. The careful observation of his natural teeth allowed us to create restorations that appear indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Results: Rejuvenated Smile Line

The before images show the patient’s initial presentation with the unsightly temporary crown. The temporary crown was wide and artificial-looking, providing a poor aesthetic result that did not give him confidence.

After the placement of the custom-crafted final crowns, the patient’s smile line was completely rejuvenated. The crowns look completely natural, they match his facial features, and they provide a smile that reflects his actual age and vitality rather than the trauma he had experienced.
